Grandma’s House–The Land That Time Forgot

My daughter, Kayla, said to me on a recent visit to my mother-in-law’s house, “I love Grandma’s house; nothing ever changes here.” Now, no disrespect to my mother-in-law; she is a very sweet woman and she has a lovely home. However, Kayla is right.

It had been a few years since I visited her home but I did notice that the guest towels in the bathroom literally had not moved an inch in three years. I also noted that the container from which I spooned my powdered coffee creamer was from GEMCO, which I believe went bankrupt in 1985.

Of course, she is not the only grandma whose home is in need of an update. Before my mom sold her home and moved in with my sister and her husband, her house was in a time warp, too. Not only did she sell that home with the original spring green and yellow paisley wallpaper, but if you opened the hall closet and peered in at just the right angle, you would swear “The Twilight Zone’s” Rod Serling was lurking just inside…

Granted, there is something amazingly comfortable about “going home again”. There’s that feeling you get when you walk into an unchanged home, one where you know every square inch and all the memories come flooding back. The wallpaper, groovy shag carpet and interesting decorating choices all become incidential when you can recall the holidays, home-cooked meals and happiness that home represents. I truly hope that one day my children are able to return to my home and bypass the decor and remember the love. I’ll even laugh with them at the bright yellow macrame plant hanger that I got from my mom.

The next time I read a weblog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this 1.I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I in fact thought youd have something interesting to say.All I hear can be a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy seeking attention.

LOL…I was just listening to the song by Golden Earring with the lyrics, “Now I'm stepping into the twilight zone..”
I remember the macrame plant hangers…wow those were the bomb to make and to have!
Home decor at that time has made millions in the box office with Austin Powers saying “shaggadelic Baby!” Let's see what they come up next!

Come on, Jackie! You know you loved the bar dad had — bars never go out of style.

lol! I love the comments in this thread! We gave my MIL a hard time when she was remodeling because we could quickly see things going mid 80's with lots of oak and brass!
