In early August, my family always put in for the forest service lottery to cut our own tree. Here in Arizona there are specific areas deemed by the forest service to be overgrown and so they allow the general public for a small fee (was $10 at one time) to put in for a lottery to determine who can cut a tree based upon how many permits they were going to issue for the year. I don’t remember there ever being a year that we weren’t drawn. Our trips were always memorable because of the various issues that always arose. When we were younger, several families joined us on our expeditions. As we grew older, it was just my immediate family until we were unable to make the journey due to time and money constraints. My sister and I will always remember and cherish those moments especially now that our father has passed away.
My husband and I have been trying to have traditions with our son. One of the traditions I started with him is creating a gingerbread house every year. We don’t keep the ones we make much longer than the new year, but we take pictures of it and he really enjoys the creative aspect of it.
The gingerbread house is usually purchased as a kit. I’ve bought several over the years and this year’s was perfect. We bought it from Costco so it was already assembled. I didn’t have to spend hours attempting to keep the walls from collapsing on me. I was able to just sit back and help my son decorate everything. It even had a tree that was extra! His attention is very limited as he has ADHD, so he did pretty well until he decided that he was done even though half the house was not decorated. Once I redirected his attention back to the project at hand, he was able to complete it with a little extra guidance.
If you don’t already have a family holiday tradition, I recommend that you start one this year. If you aren’t sure what to do, think about what kinds of things you would like to do every year during the holidays. Do you like to look at the lights? Do you visit santa? Do you like to bake cookies, pies, cakes, etc? Do you like to decorate your house? Do you enjoy volunteering? These are only some of the things you can do as a family. Just think of what your family enjoys and make that a holiday tradition. It doesn’t have to be complicated or even cost money. Whatever you decide to do, it will be memorable to you and your family. It’s part of making family memories.
