Our family recently finished reading Matilda by Roald Dahl for our Family Book Club. This was my month to choose the activities for our meeting, so we started off with the usual question; what was your favorite part of the book? It always intrigues me to hear the variety of answers from my children. Next we talked about what we thought would happen to the characters after the book ended. I guess we all want the good guys to live happily ever after.

One of our favorite parts of the book is when Ms. Trunchbull discovers a newt in her glass of water. So I boned up on some newt facts to share. These little creatures are part of the salamander family. Many newts produce a toxic skin secretion that is generally safe to touch, but can be dangerous if swallowed. Note to self, don’t eat newts.

Sticking to Ms. Trunchbull, we decided to try our hand at a couple of her passions from the Olympic field events. I don’t actually have access to the proper equipment, so we settled for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. We competed in the hammer throw and the javelin.

Finally we sat down and watched the movie version of Matilda. Since no book club meeting is complete without food, we enjoyed Ms. Trunchbull’s favorite chocolate cake, only smaller, aka chocolate cupcakes. After the movie, we discussed the ways the book and movie were different.

It’s kind of funny that most of our activities revolved around the villain. I guess it just goes to show that even villains can have good taste in Olympic events and desserts!
